'Sunshine' was the first love song I wrote about my wife Jen, back in 2006, before we we're married. We had been through some ups and downs and I wanted the song to reflect perseverance through the struggles of life to nurture a deeper love. My plan was to unveil my song to Jen, in Maui and then propose to her after singing it.

We hadn't seen in each other in several months, as Jen was working on a cruise ship in Hawaii and I was back in California. So when I came out to visit Jen in Maui it was the end of her cruise job and we had a week together to roam the island and relax. One day I rented a guitar and she got a sneaking suspicion, I was up to something. I told her I really wanted to practice while I had the time on vacation (clearly I'm a horrible liar).

One day, at sunset, we went to a little beach near Makena and I told her we should watch the sunset. I then told her, I had written a song for her and I sang 'Sunshine' for the first time. After the song, I got on one knee and proposed, as tears streamed down her face. I think it was and will always be, my favorite performance.
